Its Fashion Flash Monday!

Fashion-Flash-logoThis week  Barbara Hannah Grufferman of Best of Everything After 50  is hosting Fashion Flash! She is  a living breathing  symbol that there is  life after 50, and a great life  at that.  Last week she  was wonderful on the Today Show talking about loneliness  during the holidays.  On Facebook she shared  an amazing recipe for  Brussel sprouts with pistachios.  My favorite image of  Barbara  this week was posing with  a chocolate cake with a birthday crown on her head proudly announcing  she  had turned 58. She makes   getting older  look fun and easy and I always feel energized  after  reading her posts.

Can Cornflower Soothe my Sensitive Skin?

CornflowerQuestion:  I have sensitive skin.  This holiday, a friend gave me  some products with cornflower, saying it was  helpful for my skin problems. I am so touched by her gift, but I am frankly scared to try anything new.  Should I go ahead  and  use  them?

Answer:  While I  don’t  know  which products were in your gift basket, I can tell you there is good science behind  cornflower  skin care benefits.  A common wildflower in Europe, cornflower is known to have strong  anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.  These blue beauties are packed with Vitamin C, biotin, folic acid and mineral salts.  But wait, there’s more.  Cornflowers contain  anthrocyanins and flavinoids, two super powerful antioxidants.

Cornflower teas and extracts have been used successfully to care for skin ulcers, nail infections, eczema and dandruff.  It is especially  gentle around the … Continue Reading…

No Nonsense Fashion: Recycle with H &M

No-Nonsense Fashion-- Recycle with H&MAlthough I would honestly admit to being  a shopaholic, the chaos  and excess of holiday shopping overwhelms me.   Not only is there  just so much stuff  out there, I  can’t forget that it  winds up in  ever growing  dump sites. When I saw the bins for the H& M recycling program, a light went on in my brain.

No-Nonsense  Recycling

The concept is so  simple and just about perfect.   You bring in  unwanted clothing into H&M which will send in on to to a processing plant.  Those items that can be reworn  will be sold as second hand  goods.  The rest will be recycled into textiles for new  clothing or industrial  use such as auto insulating or cleaning rags.  This not only declutters  your drawers … Continue Reading…

The No-Nonsense Holiday Gift Guide, Part 2

No-Nonsense Holiday GiftsHere is my special friends holiday  list. Maybe I’m over thinking   this list, but its important to me that  each gift  genuinely match each friend. In past years, I would brave crowds of shoppers then  search out boxes for shipping, then stand in post office lines and pay hefty fees for  shipping.  That was then, this is now.  I now click my  way to find the best of the best  and even better the sellers wrap and ship— often without cost. FYI  I am not affiliated with any of these companies and do not receive commission.

The No-Nonsense Holiday Guide, Part I

holiday giftsWhen it comes to gifts, I don’t think its the thought that matters.  Most of the people I know have enough scarves, scented candles and picture frames to last a lifetime, and this type of generic gift does not  really show  how much I value their friendship.   I treasure gifts that  show thought and an awareness of  who I am.  For example, one of my all time favorite gifts was a tray of homemade moussaka.  We were all in grad  school in New Haven and both  money and time were in short supply.  Like me, Sheila  was a very young working  mom juggling a job, an old house and  limited daycare. When I realized that she had taken the time  to cook  this complicated dish, … Continue Reading…
