Fashion Flash Book Review: I’ll have What She is Having– My adventures in Celebrity Dieting by Rebecca Harrington
When I read about this book in Pubisher’s Weekly it sounded so interesting I pre-ordered it from Amazon. I’m so glad I did. This is just about the most entertaining diet book I’ve ever read while it actually provides some good advice. Harrington is that rare writer that can have fun with her subject while still offering good observations and experiences.
In less than 200 pages she tries out the diets and exercise programs of style icons including Cameron Diaz, Gwyneth Paltrow, Elizabeth Taylor, Madonna and Victoria Beckham. She sourced both their glossy picture filled books as well as interviews where they shared their beauty and health tips. She is quite serious trying out each regimen for up to two weeks, yet never loses her sense of humor. For example she buys caviar for Liz Taylor’s favorite meal– baked potato with sour cream and caviar. Following the advice from Ms Paltrow, her weekly grocery lists tops $150, 3X her usual bill. For a morning snack she soaks raw almonds in water and finds them delicious. Flush with success of a paprika topped grilled chicken, she decides to throw an all-Gwyneth dinner party which turned out to meat balls without meat, eggs, flour and eggs served in a thin broccoli soup. One guest pulled out his own bag of chip while another left “to go for dinner”. Ms Harrington also tries out the exercise DVD’s that are so punishing she falls asleep on the floor.
Ms Harrington loses weight on all the diets– and gains them back immediately with one slice of pizza. In the end she feels sorry for the celebrities who feel such pressure to be perfect they have to eat bizarre foods and endure punishing exercise. And she is especially grateful that she still has friends after they served as guinea pigs for these celebrity diet meals.
