Purslane- The Power Packed Health and Beauty Plant

purslaneQuestion:  I heard   a radio show that discussed the beauty benefits of  an herb called  purslane.  It sounds amazing, maybe too amazing.  Do you recommend it for anti-aging skin care?

Answer:  Cool question!  Purslane is one of the oldest  and widely used medical plants.  It is found throughout the world in warm climates and is a popular vegetable in the Middle and Far East.  Purslane is packed with minerals and  vitamins including, zinc, iron, potassium, vitamin C, antioxidants, and beta carotene.  But wait there’s more.   Purslane has the highest levels of Omega 3 fatty acids found in a vegetable. Seriously.

Studies have shown that purslane preperations  made from dried leaves have significant  anti-inflammatory and anti- pain properties.  To my mind this makes a purslane  the perfect  treatment for  a sunburn or after a date with a laser. Researchers  have also found that a concentrated purslane extract  can speed wound healing, making it a great tool for cuts and scrape. Despite these benefits, I was surprised how few brands included this mightly green in their formulations.  Happily,  Dr Jart brand uses  uses  purslane in a number of products including Dr Jart V7 Relief Vita Drop and Ceramidin Cream.

DIY Purslane Products

You can  make up for the lack of commercial  purslane products in your own kitchen.  Pick up some purslane  supplements that contain dried  and powdered leaves.  Empty  4-5 capsules in a cup  and pour on 1/2 cup  boiing water.  Stir and  let the mixture rest for 1 hr.  Strain and bottle the resulting purslane extract.  For a sunburn, pour it in a spray bottle, add 1 cup of water  and I teaspoon olive  oil. Shake and spray for genuine  sunburn relief.

You can also use the purslane extract  as a base for a mask..  For dry skin  whip up one teaspoon extract with an egg yolk. ( for oily skin, use the egg white in the same way.) Pat the egg mixture on the face and alow  the mask to dry for 30 minutes.  Rinse off and  enjoy a cool, calm complexion.

 

Purslane– Its Not  Just for Your Skin

Purslane offers  equally impressive   benefits when added to soups,  smoothies and salads.  Fresh crisp puslane leaves can replace  lettuce on your sandwiches and spinach in pastas and stir fries.  Sadly its not widely available and expensive  if  it is sold.   Happily it is easily grown in a pot  if you have a sunny window ledge.  Its worth the time and money to get purslane into your diet.  Michel Pollan, author of the bestselling The Omnivore’s Dilemma, dubbed purslane one of the two most  nutritious pants on earth.

But I still haven’t answered the question. Actually   I could not  any  reliable research on anti-aging properties  of purslane.  However this impressive plant offers other significant  health and beauty benefits and is  worth a spot in your diet and skin care plans.
