Fashion Flash Book ReviewFashion Flash Book Review:  Fictionally Fabulous by Anne K. Higgins

Who are your favorite style icons?  For me it is definately the styles I see on film. I often try to anlyze what I loved  in an outfit and look for ways to duplicate or translate it  using items from my own closet.  I don’t have an innate  sense of what looks good with what and the work of a great film stylist is a valuable guide for me.  This is probably why I adore a  small but  mighty new fashion guide “Fictionally Fabulous”.   Author and illustrator Anne Keenan Higgins profiles  over 35 famous tv and movie characters.  From Ali Mcgraw in Love Story to Cookie in Empire, Higgins sketches a range of outfits that defined the characters.  She covers a wide range  of eras from turn of the century  Lady Mary Crawley in Downton Abbey to  1950’s Betty Draper in  Madmen to contemporary  Carrie Bradshaw, Higgins deconstructs components of the looks we love.  Of course I especially loved the sections on Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Andy  in The Devil Wears Prada.

I don’t know about you, but I tend to get overwhelmed in  a department store.  This book helped  to identify specific items that I could use to get the looks I was aiming for.  For example, Higgins pointed out that the black peacoat that AliMcgraw wore in Love Story was the linchpin of  her  pretty but not fussy preppy look.   I realized this was exctly the  multi season  coat I needed. Charging into Macy’s I was able to focus on this single item and came home with the perfect peacoat. . I loved this book so  much its going to my holiday gift to my fashionista friends. I know they will crush on  it as much as I do.
