Brows Gone Wild

There is certainly a whole  lot of growing going on. It’s been almost four months since I started to Rogaine reatment and brow hairs have certainly  sprouted where nothing  has grown for years. I was expecially happy to see the new growth was mostly dark and thick rather than pale and wispy.  More hair seems to have gowth below the actual brows in the area I usually waxed.  But the arch of the brow has also visibly  filled in.

On the downside the hair seems a  bit more wirey than my  pre-Rogaine brows. In the past I would tweeze  away these  unruly hairs to clean up the brow line.  The  eyebrow expert at Benefit  showed me how to trim curly brow hairs to keep the volume, but smooth the line.  Using a magnifying glass and an eyebrow brush, I now comb the brow hairs  up and  trim off the longer … Continue Reading…

Rogaine is Growing My Eyebrows!

Rogaine seems to be really working on my too skinny eyebrows. Its been  almost two months since I began applying Rogaine foam twice a day  to my brow area. To be totally honest I had a rocky time getting into a treatment routinue.   For most of the first month, I would miss at least one application a day.  And some days I never got around to  using Rogaine at all. It certainly was not  time or labor intensive but definately  aan extra step.  It took me a month to get into a regular routinue so I feel I am really just  in the first month of treatment.

Rogaine Routinue 101

I have been using 5% Rogaine for women foam.  The instructions recommend filling the entire cap with foam and use it all over your scalp.  There are no recommendations for eyebrows so I wasted quite a bit of the … Continue Reading…

Regrowing My Brows with Rogaine

I started using  Rogaine about a month ago to thicken and lengthen my aging eyebrows.  It had been a slow start.  Current guidelines recommend using Rogaine twice a day.  This  meant  applying Rogaine foam with a Q- tipa fter  my morning shower and  before I go to sleep at night.. Sounds  simple, but it meant adding two more steps to my standard morning and nighttime routine. At first  I applied the foam to the skinny “tail” areas.

I have to admit  that in the first few weeks I usually mised one of the two  daily applictions. Although I am pretty  motivated to try out new  beauty tools, I  also knew that it would be 1-2 months  before I would see any results. I love the instant results of a mask or peel and this was very different. After  a rocky two week start, I finally got into a steady routinue. … Continue Reading…

Rogaine Trials– Month 1

Rogaine treated eyebrow Before starting on Rogaine treatment for my aging eyebrows I wanted to understand how it works.  For that I needed to understnd how healthy hair grows  and what is causing my brows to thin out. Hair grows in four stages:

The growth phase—  aka   the anagen phase is a period of healthy growth can  last for  2-6 years. If you  pull out a growing  hair by the root,  it can take  years for  it to grow out. . The transition phase — aka the catagen phase  lasts for 10 days to three weeks.  At this point  the  hair is still alive but no longer growing. The resting phase — aka the telegen phase lasts 2-3 months and well,  rests. The natural end— aka the exogen … Continue Reading…

Can Rogaine Regrow My Eyebrows?

Rogaine for Eyebrow GrowthI am now ready to try my last  eyebrow option– FDA approved hair growing serums.  To date  I  have tried a celebrity eyebrow expert,  brow make-up ( gels, roll-ons and powders) and brow tints.   Next on my brow to-do list was brow enhancement.  Very much like  lash enhancements with individual hairs,  Build- A -Brow  adds individual hairs to the brows.   Its expensive and short lived, but  I felt  compelled to explore it.

At the Blink Bar at Saks Fifth Avenue full  brow enhancement costs $170 and lasts for two weeks.  Its something that  they recommend  for special occasions like weddings  and reunions. The first time  it is done, a patch test is required  24 hours before  the appointment.   Some people are … Continue Reading…

Eyebrow Makeover– Tinting

For some reason the idea of eyebrow tinting  terrified me.  I’ve been lasered,  waxed, Botoxed and bleached but tinting seemed especially risky. ?????  But ever the science geek, I had to try it out. After checking out several salons, I choose  the Benefit Brow Bar.  I had watched them work and I was genuinely  impressed  by the careful and individual  approach  they took with every brow.

My  brow  whisperer Shante had beautiful brows   which gave me a great sense of confidence. I  discussed the celebrity brow expert who  had striped off my once thick brows.  A year later, they had not  returned to  their normal fullness.  Shante  reassured me that it can take 12-18 moths for an over- plucked brow  to recover. She primarily cleaned up stray hairs and flattened out the  too round arch.  Yea! She mixed  a small dab of vegetable dye in a tiny cup  and

The Ultimate Eyebrow

Last spring I went to an expensive celebrity  eyebrow expert.  In less than 5 minutes he reduced  my thick unruly  brows to a skinny, ugly semi-circle.  I left as quickly as I could   muttering to myself, “at least I have bangs, at least I have bangs”

I vowed to discover the real secrets of a good looking brow.  It has taken almost nine months for my brows to grow back enough to try out other brow beauty options. Talking to  experts, I began to underestand the basic issues behind eyebrow shape and volume. In reality, our brows are determined by the shape of the  brow  bone and  the pattern of hair growth. While brow styles go in and out of fashion, the basic shape  follows individual  anatomy. Blondes  have lighter, sparser brows, but  as we grow older   most of our brows  shorten and thin out. Working within these … Continue Reading…

Matching Your Eyebrows to Your Hair Color

eyebrowsBefore the celebrity brow expert removed most of my eyebrows, he tried to convince me to  tint them.  He explained that much of my brow was made up of thin, pale hairs and tinting them would make my brows to look fuller.  This sounded reasonable but tinting is  big step– and not something you do the first time someone works on your brows.  Given that Mr  Eyebrows left me  with a thinly rounded circa 1930 brow line, I was really glad I had stood my ground. Darker thin brows would  have been even  more obvious and  unattractive.

But the experience pushed me to get some good answers to  related brow questions.  For example  what is the best color brow  with grey hair or should  your brows match your red hair?  All … Continue Reading…
