Its Fashion Flash Monday!

Fashion-Flash-logoThis week Jackie of Aging Backwards is hosting Fashion Flash! I have learned to trust Jackie’s advice on health and beauty.  She introduced me to  the best  skin cleansing system I have ever tried– and  trust  me when I say I have tried   many.  Her recipes are  both delicious and packed with nutrition.  She taught me how to  bake bread and  I now can dazzle  guests with a  bowl of soup and a loaf of homemade dill  bread.  A few months ago I had signs of an ulcer  and Jackie recommended a mix of  fresh cabbage juice and honey.  it sounded so bizarre, but  out when I did a medline  search, it turns out that the sulfur in the cabbage is known to  destroy the bacteria  that  a part of … Continue Reading…

Anti-Aging Claims and the FDA

collection of cosmetic productsCan anti-aging products really deliver as promised?  The FDA is not so sure and in recent months sent  warning letters to several  cosmetic  compaies including  Avon and L’Oreal.  Their concern?  Questionnable claims made for some of  their skin care products that included ” improve condition around stem cells”, “boosts activity of genes”,  and “stimulates production of youth proteins” (???).

Can You Believe What You Read?

By law, the FDA defines cosmetics as a product used for cleansing and beautifying, but if it affects structure or function of the skin or body, it is classified as a drug.  And if its a  drug, it must go through extensive clinical trials to prove its both safe and effective.  The FDA is asking that  Avon  and L’Oreal  either  prove their claims or change … Continue Reading…

Clear and Brilliant– New Laser, New Skin

There’s  a new anti-aging  laser in town and its called Clear and Brilliant.  Its  from the same company that developed Thermage and Fraxel— and sometimes Clear and Brilliant is described as ‘babyFraxel”.  I’m already a big fan  of “baby botox” so  this laser  is right in my  comfort zone. In addition to smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles by stimulating collagen production, this new anti-aging tool reduces age spots and some types of acne scars.

Like its big sister Fraxel,  Clear and Brilliant  is an anti-aging laser that delivers  energy in a grid pattern.   However  true Fraxel goes deeper, can  be uncomfortable  and requires 3-5 days of healing.  By contrast this new rejuvenating laser   is  never painful and the skin  recovers within hours.     Since baby steps  might as well be my middle name, I was eager to try it out with my super derm, Dr Ellen Marmur. Anti-Aging Advances

DERMATOLOGY CONFERENCEEach year  in December, the three day Mount Sinai conference on new developments  in dermatology is the holiday gift that keeps on giving. The best of the best   share  what they’ve discovered and how they care for  a wide range of skin, nail and hair problems.  This year the presentations were truely amazing and I got answers to long asked questions including:

* How long do  you need to stick to an acne regimen to determine if its working?  Hint: its shorter than you might think.

* How can I moisturize  the skin without clogging pores?

* Can women of color use lasers?

Founded by Dr Albert Lefkovits, this program attracts worldwide  experts both to speak and to  learn.   What I find is especially helpful is that  most of the … Continue Reading…

This beautiful spring morning the host of Fashion  Flash is Jodell of Black Cat Plus.  Not only does Jodell discuss the  plus size fashion tips, she is now an e-tailer of some of the top clothing brands.   My cousin lives in an area where choices in plus size fashion is very limited.  She could  find the basics, but for  anything aboove that it was a struggle.  Now with Black Cat Plus she can find clothing  she loves, not something she has to settle for.

And when you’ve finished looking through  all the  dynamic Fashion Flash sites,  check out  Brown Skin by Susan Taylor MD.   A Harvard trained dermatologist, Dr Taylor provides a culturally sensitive, comprehensive  guide to  skin care for women of color.  African American, Hispanic and Asian skin has the ability to naturally resist aging, but is vulnerable … Continue Reading…

Meet the Anti-aging, Antioxidant Beauty Food– Spinach

When I was a child the only spinach I knew was the droopy olive green strands that came in a can.   Then one night I went out to steak house with  my friend Kim and her parents.   I was  thinking only of a juicy filet and hash browns and my heart sank as Kim’s mother also ordered a spinach and bacon salad.   Still cringing I dug  in my fork and pulled out the tinest bit of bacon drenched  leaf.  It was love at first bite. I ate every morsel of that salad and every time I went to a  restaurant I scanned the menu for a similar dish.

But more than delicious and versatile,  spinach  is  a nutritious anti-aging, antioxidant  rock star.  Raw or cooked, its packed with antioxidants like vitamin A ( 168% of RDA), leutin, … Continue Reading…

Sun Protection in Real Time

I recently went to the summer meeting of the Americn Academy of Dermatology in NYC.   There were  a number of new areas of research on the horizon, but frankly at my age, I am looking  for new anti-aging tools I can use right now.  And I got  just that type of  info at presentation on skin  of color by Dr Wendy Roberts of Loma Linda University.

Most of Dr Roberts presentation  focused on the pros and cons  of different types of lightening agensts– all good info that I will be using to answer  related questions on an upcoming Question and Answer post.  But the BIG IDEA   came up when Dr Roberts   addressed ways to prevent pigmentation.  The audience of mostly female derms  shared their  concerns that patients were just  not  using and or not reapplying their sunscreens.  Dr Roberts suggested  adding … Continue Reading…
