Can anti-aging products really deliver as promised? The FDA is not so sure and in recent months sent warning letters to several cosmetic compaies including Avon and L’Oreal. Their concern? Questionnable claims made for some of their skin care products that included ” improve condition around stem cells”, “boosts activity of genes”, and “stimulates production of youth proteins” (???).

Question— In a few months I’m turning 50. After half a century, my skin is looking tired and I want to give myself a birthday present. Which would be better, microdermabrasion or Botox? You seem to really like both of them.
Answer— Happy birthday! I do like both microdermsabrasion and Botox, but they are very different anti-aging tools and deal with different problems. Microdermabrasion takes of the top dead layer of skin cells to leave the skin smoother, brighter and softer. In addition, removing these old cells actually stimulates the lower levels to grow. Researchers have noticed that mens’ skin seems to age more slowly than women’s– and they believe that part of the reason is the daily shave which encourages the growth of fresh new skin every day.
When I go out to dinner with my daughters, wherever we go, they always order the same thing– salad and salmon. I, on the other hand, see the words PORK CHOP and I’m in. They like salmon because its lower in calories and cholesterol and roll their eyes at my choice. And there is so much evidence that they are on the right track. No only is fish so much lower in calories than my beloved pork chop, its omega3 fatty acids have been liked to lower rates of heart disease, better blood pressure and even less depression. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a type of photorejuvenation that uses a blast of light to remove freckles, unwanted hair and little red lines on the skin. Often called the “lunchtime laser” it does not burn off the top layers of the skin like a tradtional laser and the skin looks beautiful and smooth within a week. I had IPL last year in June with Dr Marmur and was so pleased with the results. I thought it made my skin look tighter and fresher and I posted before and after pics on the blog.
