What supplements should I take for beautiful skin?

I so wish there was a  nutritional supplement  I could take that would make my skin smooth, soft and radiant.   But the links between beautiful  skin and nutrition are more complex than that.  The NHANES study looked at the relationship between health and diet and found that people whose diets were higher in vitamin C, fiber,  protein and linoleic acid  looked  younger and had fewer wrinkles.  But these benefits  were only there  when  the nutrients were from actual food– not where people took supplements.   I know first hand  how hard it is to find healthy food in a world dominated by burgers, tacos, pizza and take-out chinese food.  At lunchtime, I’ve walked for blocks with a rumbling tummy  trying to find a quick bite that wouldn’t shorten my lifespan.   A multi-vitamin supplement can cover  my dietary shortfalls  but won’t really give me the  … Continue Reading…

The Anti-Aging Diet–Pears

Yesterday  was the first day of fall– and nothing says fall like a ripe juicy pear.  These  beauties  provide hydration and if you eat the skin, a nice serving of both fiber and vitamin C.  In fact one  pear provide 4 grams of fiber at the cost of  just 95 calories.  By comparison 1/2 cup of cooked beans ( famous for their fiber) have 6 grams of fiber at 150 calories.

All pears eg Anjou, Bosc, Bartlett, and Comice share the same nutritional profiles.  Most of the nutritional payload in pears is  in the skin,  so canned and cooked pears don’t have the same anti-aging benefits.

Clarisonic Opal Eye Infuser-Week One

I’ve been using the Clarisonic Opal for a week  and at first I was all thumbs.  I  had to read the instructions several times before I felt comfortable to try it.  It is not  like any other device that I had used and I’m especially anxious about using anything around my eyes.

The oval device  has a little nubbin that you fill with serum. This pale amber gel  had a number of interesting ingredients which had  some good science behind them.  These included world class antioxidants including green tea and resveratrol and marine peptides, vitamin C to brighten the skin and glycosaminoglycans ( what a mouthful)  for firmness.

The Beauty of Broccoli

Searching for  multi-tasking foods that deliver  both health and beauty, you don’t have  to look further than broccoli.  It has been growing wild in the Mediterrean for centuries and plays a big role in the healthy lifestyles of Greece and Italy.  A scant cup of raw chopped broccoli  provides almost 40% of the RDA of vitamin A, and 155% of vitamin C — and all at  a mere 28 calories.  That’s impressive.  But wait there is more. Fashion Flash Monday!

Its Fashion Flash Monday and  this week   the host is Shawna  of Fat Loss Over  Forty. After almost six months  of huddling in the heaviest sweaters I  could find its now  sleeveless dress time.  My guns are pretty white and flabby and Shawna   has great advice  for getting gorgeous arms. 

 And  with fitness on my mind, I  took another look at  Enter the Zone.   This is a hugely popular low-carb, low saturated diet book.  The author, Barry Sears  holds a PHd in biochemistry and is a former MIT researcher.  His interest in weight control stems from his focus on heart disease and the science behind The Zone diet is actually based on research that won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1982.  Impressive!  The Zone Diet is certainly backed up by a boatload of science and as a former lab rat, I value that.

The Big Red Beauty Food

The NHANES study  found that women who had diets high in vitamin C  had  fewer lines and wrinkles.  Good to know, but  what  does that mean  in terms of real food?   I started to look into vitamin C rich foods, and discovered that tomatoes  offered a great nutritional package.  In the US, over half of our daily vitamin C intake is from tomatoes.  In addition to being essential for the formation of wrinkle- busting  collagen, vitamin C is also a  uber anti-oxidant that  protects against aging free radicals.  And the benefits don’t stop there. Shoe sluts unite!  That’s the battle cry of  Shoedish who is  hosting Fashion Flash today.  This week the site is looking  ahead to what’s new in flip flops. It cold and rainy today, but reading Shoedish makes me  believe that flip flop seson is just around the corner.  When it stops raining, I’m going shoe shopping.

At No-Nonsense Beauty Blog I’ve been getting alot of comments  about my post on vegetarians and skin care.
