Kale is the “it” food of the year– and for good reason. A single one cup serving of kale has just 36 calories yet delivers a payload of 5 grams of fiber, 180% of vitamin A, 200% of vitamin C, 45 different antioxidants and 10x the RDA of vitamin K. I think that kale can legitimately call itself the ‘beauty green ‘ since it offers so much fiber and vitamin C, the two nutrients linked to lower levels of wrinkles in the landmark NHANES study.
But wait there is more. Kale, a cruciferous veggie like cauliflower and broccoli, also contains sulfur compounds that are linked to reduced risk of lung, breast, colon, bladder and prostate cancer. There is even some evidence that these sulfur componds, called glucosinolates, inhibit the spread of … Continue Reading… →
Fashion Flash this week is hosted by Cindy of Prime Beauty . I was a big fan of Prime Beauty, long before she agreed to join Fashion Flash. I quickly learned to just her judgement about products and some of my current favorites were discovered in her blog posts. At The BoomBox Party during BlogHer, I got a chance to see her in action. I watched as she interviewed a few brands and was so impressed by the insightful and useful posts she wrote about the new skin care lines. She can spot a new idea, literally across the room, while I am still trying to find my glasses. If you care about how you look, check out Prime Beauty before you buy new products. She’s that good.
Now that summer is finally here, I am so excited to be hosting the first all summer theme Fashion Flash. Our bloggers have drilled down into their topics to share their experiences and skills. In addition to blue skies and sandy beaches, summer brings heat and humidity that affects skin and hair in ways that can last through winter. Summer also changes diets and nutritional needs. Digestion slows down and our need for water, both inside and out, increases as the thermometer rises. The Fashion Flash bloggers have got you covered:
*Tired of going to the gym when the weather is so beautiful outside? Kari of Fab Over 40 has some outdoor exercises to keep in shape in summer months.
This week Une Femme d’un Certain Age is hosting Fashion Flash for the first time. We’re so excited that she has joined Fashion Flash to round out our group. Her “classic with a twist” style is chic but never dull and she shares her fashion explorations with charm and humor. Don’t miss her scarf tying videos which can change an outfit from ordinary to elegant. Une Femme d’un Certain Age is one of the very first sites I subscribed to and I still love to start the day with her posts.
When I saw the title of Real Moms Love to Eat I was hooked. I remember how hard it was to follow good nutritional guidelines when I had young children in the home. Corraling two little girls off to school before going to work, then … Continue Reading… →
I’m working my way through the vegetable aisle, picking out items in no particular order. Recently I added big bunch of curly kale to my cart and started to explore its nutritional profile. I was blown away! This common, affordable leafy green is so high in nutrients its ridonkulus. One half cup of cooked kale, which clocks in at just 21 calories, is practically bursting with a boatload of the strongest antioxidants. Its got twice the RDA for both vitamin A and vitamin C–both key anti-wrinkling nutrients. It even has respectable servings of calcium, iron and fiber. But wait there’s more. There is evidence that kale is anti-inflammatory, offering a healthy dose of cancer fighting indoles. Even better, Kale preserves these nutrients after steaming, a stint in the microwave or stir … Continue Reading… →
